Toone, Eugene - Blesseth Be The Name

Funk/Soul/Gospel | New York | 1979

Eugene Toon (also known as Gene Toone) was a gospel/soul singer and songwriter based out of New York. I can't find much information on Eugene, but from the back of this LP jacket it looks like he was a singer and guitarist in a variety of groups including the Golden Leaf Quartet, The Job Gospel Singers, and the All Stars of Brooklyn, and The Mighty Gospel Giants.

This LP consists of songs written, arranged, produced, and performed by Eugene Toon and the group The Singing Angels. As far as I can tell this is the only full-length LP released by Eugene. He cut a few funk/soul singles in the 1960s and 1970s, most of which are highly sought after and fetching hundreds or thousands of dollars at auction.

Eugene's daughter contacted me and let me know Eugene is alive and well at 92.

Interestingly, his son was a member of Kool and The Gang!

Turner, Jeff - Cowboys, Truckers, And Lovers

Country | Australia/Switzerland | 1984

Jeff Turner's 1984 LP Cowboys, Truckers and Lovers released in Sweden on MSM Records.

From the German-language Wikipedia:

"In Australia, the newly married Turner worked in the health sector with osteopathy (alternative medicine) and chiropractic. But his interest in music had been with him for a long time. He came to Switzerland after his divorce in October 1980 to teach stress management seminars. When an artist dropped out in a small theater in Lucerne, he was able to fill in with guitar and vocals. From 1981 he lived in Switzerland. In 1983 he received a record deal. He also worked in Switzerland as a therapist and mental trainer. He lived with his partner Maria in Buochs and then in Beckenried. His two children from his first marriage live in Australia.

Jeff Turner performed with greats like Johnny Cash, John Brack and Steve Lee with Gotthard. Turner released 15 albums (records and CDs). Some of his recordings have been awarded gold (25,000) and platinum (50,000). His songs have been included in 15 top-selling compilations worldwide. He played and sang the lead role in the Western Musical Show Jeff, which premiered in Winterthur in January 1995. The CDs were recorded in Nashville and London. Before the year 2000, Jeff Turner started the Swiss Christmas tours together with John Brack. Those were stage performances together with practically the entire Swiss country elite. After a few minor strokes, he performed for the last time in 2019 at the Country Festival in Albisgüetli in Zurich.

On July 31, 2020, the singer suffered a massive stroke and recovered after a hospital stay in rehab. But at the end of December he died as a result of the stroke."

Turner, Jim - The Well-Tempered Saw

Folk/Country/Classical/Etc. | Colorado | 1971

Album from Colorado musician Jim Turner, released on Owl Records.

Jim Turner was/is a musical saw player originally from Lewistown, Montana. He started playing the musical saw in 1956. He performed frequently in 'The Rocky Mountain Region' in the 1960s and 1970s, including in 'drug stores, playgrounds, municipal buildings, street corners, classrooms, mountain peaks, mine shafts, haunted houses, and hardware stores'. According to the liner notes, he played on The Tonight Show on March 25, 1969 (you can find this appearance on YouTube!) and on The Steve Allen Show on October 16, 1969. As far as I can tell this is his only LP.

In addition to Turner, the Boulder Philharmonic was involved in the recording of this LP. The LP was engineered by Dave Howard, Charlie Shoemaker, and Jim Weaver.
