Goebel, Jerry - Candleflame

Singer-Songwriter | 1986

Jerry Goebel released several LPs in the 1980s on a variety of labels. All songs on this LP were written by Jerry. He is still performing today, but from what I can tell his focus these days is on ministry and writing books. He has a website at onefamilyoutreach.com.

Gospel Edition, The - That I Could Still Go Free

Country-Gospel | Kentucky | Unknown Year

LP from Louisville, Kentucky country-gospel group The Gospel Edition, released on Veritas Records.

Bill Lynn was the leader of the group, but the liner notes don't mention the names of the other members. It's possible that the instrumentalists are the members pictured on the cover, but I cannot confirm this.

Musicians on the LP include Keith Brown on piano, Jerry Phelps on steel guitar, Don Mathes on drums, Dave Kerr on lead/rhythm guitar, and Bill Lynn on bass. The LP was produced by Harold Brown and engineered by Charlie Tallent. It was recorded at Ray Stevens Sound Laboratory in Nashville, Tennessee.

Gospel Heritage, The - Something Worth Living For

Gospel | Indiana | Unknown Year

Album by Indiana gospel group The Gospel Heritage, released on Mission Records.

The Gospel Heritage was comprised of members Rod Hoschouer, Glen Adamson, and Joe Money. They appear to have been based in the Indianapolis area, with testimonials on the LP cover given by pastors from Danville and Greenwood Indiana.

The LP appears to have been recorded and released sometime in the early 1970s but I can't place an exact date. As far as I can tell this was their only release, and the only trace of them I can find online are in some Indianapolis-area newspaper archives advertising performances in the early 1970s. The LP was recorded at Mission Records studio in Nashville, Tennessee. It was produced by Louie S. Swift and engineered by Jack Linneman. Additional credits on the LP include Benny Kennerson on piano, Tommy Floyd on bass, Bob Seymour on pedal steel, and Paul Charron on drums. The pedal steel work by Bob Seymour is especially great on this LP, with a whining, almost synthesized sound that you can also hear on some Mickey Newbury records he played on.

The Gospel Lights consisted of Wanita Coffey, Finas Denny, Dwight Hardin, and Martha Hardin.

Gospel Travelers, The - God Loves His Children

Country-Gospel | California | Unknown Year

LP by bluegrass-gospel group The Gospel Travelers, released on Crusade Records

The Gospel Travelers formed in 1963 in Santa Cruz, California by guitarists Bud Durbin, mandolin player Ralph Gillespie, banjo played Max Shannon, and bassist Archie Salters. The band members originated from all over the United States: Durbin from Texas, Gillespie from West Virginia, Shannon from Arkansas, and Salters from Oklahoma.

I can't find much other information about The Gospel Travelers online. There was a family band of the same name active in the 1960s, but it appears the two group are unrelated.

Green, Brownie - Apple Blossom Time

Country | 1977

1977 LP by country singer Brownie Green, released on Stoneway Records.

According to the liner notes of this LP, Brownie Green performed at the Grand Ole Opry in the 1930s with Cousin Harold Goodman and Curt Polsen. In the 1940s he worked with Hank Locklin. He was also worked with Jim and Bill Boyd in Dallas and participated in a two-year tour with The Bowery Boys. He was also a regular on the Tacoma, Washington show "Western Jamboree". As far as I can tell this is his only solo LP. He put out a few singles in the late 60s and 70s, including the title track of this LP, "Apple Blossom". Other than the biographical information in the liner notes, I can't independently confirm his performances on the Grand Ole Opry or with Hank Locklin in the 1940s.

Greenwood Country Singers, The - The Ballad Of Cat Ballou

Folk-Pop | 1965

The Greenwood County Singers' 1965 LP, released on Kapp Records.

The Greenwood County Singers were a folk-pop group based out of Los Angeles in the 1960s.There isn't much information floating around online about the group, but the most notable fact is that a young Van Dyke Parks was in the group (along with his brother Carson Parks). His involvement with The Greenwood County Singers predated his work with Brian Wilson, Ry Cooder, and Randy Newman. It was around this time that Parks was in Frank Zappa's live band as well. None of the other members of the group went on to enjoy the same level of success as Van Dyke Parks.

The Greenwood County Singers released seven LPs that I can find between 1964 and 1970.

Gresham, Roland - Sing A New Song

Jazz/Gospel | Tennessee | Unknown Year

Gospel tape from smooth jazz guitarist Roland Gresham, released on Jubal Records.

Gresham has put out several LPs, CDs, and tapes of instrumental gospel music since the 1980s.

The tape was produced by Roland Gresham and was recorded and mixed at "Doc's Place" studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee by David Cline. Backing vocals are credited to A Special Blend.

From his website rolandgreshamdownloads.com:

"Jazz guitarist Roland Gresham is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up under the influence of his father who was also a jazz guitarist, and a fan of legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery. Roland started playing guitar at the age of six with no formal training. By the time he was in high school he could play along with any song heard on the radio, and won the talent contest his freshman year. By the age of twenty, Roland was performing for banquets, wedding receptions, and other events. In the early 1980's Roland discovered the music of George Benson, and quickly became a fan. Shortly after, people started comparing his sound to that of George Benson, a comment often repeated today.

Roland has recorded several CDs during his career, including "Pillow Talk," "Holiday Memories," and various gospel jazz recordings. His latest recording, “Memories of Michael Jackson,” is a tribute to the late, great Michael Jackson. It has been said that Roland Gresham plays music that TOUCHES THE SOUL!!!"
